When you finish your orthodontic treatment at Bovenizer Orthodontics, you will be given a set of retainers to wear. In the beginning, Dr Bovenizer will recommend that you wear your retainers all of the time. After you come back for your retainer check, Dr Bovenizer will decide how long you will need to keep your retainers on full time and when you can scale back to night -time wear.

Retainers are now recommended for a lifetime. As orthodontics continues to evolve, research on the aging process has shown that teeth can shift,  even after braces. In the past, most orthodontists  recommended that patients wear their retainers two years before removing them.  If you look at most adults who had braces as children and only wore their retainers for two years, you will see how teeth slip back out of place. Most orthodontists now recommend that retainers need to be worn nightly for the rest of their patient’s lives.

Wearing a retainer for life is not something that most patients want to hear, but it’s an important part of the orthodontic process. After spending two years of your life in braces, isn’t it worth it to keep that beautiful smile in line for life by wearing a retainer? Think of it as part of your daily routine and you will get in the habit. Everyday you brush your teeth, comb your hair and put clothes on, just add a retainer to that list and you’ll keep those pearly whites in shape.

Drs. Todd Bovenizer and Dwight Damon at the Damon Forum 2013 in Orlando Florida February 15-17th.

Dr. Bovenizer was in Orlando over the past weekend participating in the 13th Annual Damon Forum. A 3-day continuing education seminar about the braces we use in our office – The Damon System. This year’s general session focused on new technology and provided an inside look at new clinical modalities.  Dr. Bovenizer was asked to contribute in this year’s forum discussing his experience with new archwire technology and how to incorporate it with Damon System principles for more efficient treatment.

Dr. Bovenizer takes part in numerous clinical trials and helps provide feedback to help improve the technology and mechanics of the materials that we use through Ormco and Damon technology.  Some of the more recent trials include AdvanSync,  Damon Clear and CuAINI Archwires.

We all know its hard to have excellent oral hygiene, but when you have braces it’s even harder! Everyone knows that if you’re in orthodontic treatment brushing and flossing after every meal and snack is crucial. Plaque can build up around the brackets more easily when you have braces. Food gets daily trapped in parts of the braces and remains there causing decay.

So what can you do to make sure you have the best results possible? There are a few things that truly make a difference so we’ve compiled a 10 best list.

1. Start by removing any elastics before brushing

2. Use a soft compact toothbrush and flouride toothpaste

3. Brush thoroughly, 10 times on the chewing surface, outside and inside of each tooth. Then brush where your gums and teeth meet, using a circular motion.

4. Use an interdental toothbrush (proxabrush) to your teeth, braces, and gums clean and healthy. It can be used to clean under orthodontic wires and around braces. Use slowly and carefully so you don’t damage your braces.

5. Floss your teeth. Use a floss threader. Thread floss through the threader and slip it up behind your arch wire. Pull the floss between two teeth and up under your gum margins. Rinse with lots of clean water!

6. Rinse your mouth with mouthwash after you brush to kill any bacteria

7. See your dentist regularly (at least every 6 months) to maintain good oral hygiene

8. Avoid foods that you know are tough on your braces such as sticky or sweet foods and candies.

9. Use a waterpik or water jet to remove any resistant food particles. The water jet shoots a stream of water that dislodges remaining food particles.

10. When you’re done, inspect your teeth in the mirror to make sure you didn’t miss anything.

Even though Breast Cancer Awareness month has come to an end, the lives it continues to touch remain. In honor of these brave women who fight the fight and for those who have lost but are never forgotten, Dr. Bovenizer has donated a portion of each patient who started in the month of October to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  We would also like to especially recognize Kristi Walker, who lost her life to this disease at the young age of 30.

This is one of the questions we most frequently are asked in our office. It’s kind of like the “how long till we get there?” question that all kids ask in a long car ride. The answer really varies by the type of orthodontic challenges that you or your child has. Based on the issues, we can give you a time frame for completion of your treatment. The average child in our practice finishes within 2 years, but this is just an average and your case may be longer or shorter depending upon the issue.
Many people come to our office and believe that the orthodontic issue they have is minor.  One of the most common things we here is “I just have this one tooth that I would like to move back into place.” Maybe you’ve even checked  out your teeth yourself and while there are  a few uneven ones, things don’t look that bad. Then you come to the orthodontist and  he tells you that it will be much longer than you expected and several thousand dollars more. How could  “simple” treatment take so long and cost so much?

The answers are not at all simple. In the thousands of cases that Dr Bovenizer has seen many people with “just one tooth out of place” need full orthodontic treatment. Others truly are simple cases that can be treated in less than a year. The most important thing that we can tell you is that when you or your child needs care only the doctor can give you a true estimate of the time and movement that needs to take place with your teeth. You see “just one tooth out of place” could be your entire bite is off and needs to be aligned so that as you age your teeth will stay in place.

There are some factors that make a huge difference in treatment time and cost. These factors make a difference in time in orthodontic care:

• Malocclusion (how severe your bite problem is)
• Dental care and treatment during and before braces
• Compliance with our treatment protocols (specifically do you follow our directions)

Even if you are the best patient in the world and follow all of our recommendations sometimes your bite problem is so bad that it will take longer than normal to complete. We understand that being in orthodontic care can be uncomfortable and a hassle, but we hope you will agree that the smile that you end up with is something you will be proud of for the rest of your life.

Give us a call and we will schedule you for a free initial exam where you can find out exactly how long the treatment time will take.

Years ago, most orthodontists in Cary removed teeth when they saw a mouth that was too small, and teeth that were too big. That was common place in the 60′s, 70′s and 80′s. Many parents come into our practice today with the same thought pattern “I had teeth removed, so will my kids.” This is one of the most common things we hear from parents when they bring their children to our office for an initial orthodontic exam.  The good thing is times have changed! Technology has completely changed the way we think about removing teeth.

With traditional braces many orthodontists pull teeth to create space for crowded teeth. There are very few orthodontists who like to pull teeth. Having a broad movie star smile is really what most people are looking for. That’s why we us the Damon System.  The Damon System uses biologically sensible forces which work with the body’s natural adaptive processes to create space naturally, so we can now treat most cases without extraction.

There are times that we do require an extraction. In these cases space is made to improve facial balance and symmetry and to provide a smile  that will last as you age.

So why are there people who still need teeth removed?

There are several reasons that teeth are removed before orthodontic treatment.

  • In many cases orthodontists will remove baby (primary) teeth. This helps to allow space for permanent teeth to erupt with enough room.
  • Sometimes, doctors are using an older system of braces and cannot get the type of correction they desire without removing teeth.
  • In some cases, adults require treatment and their jaws have completed growing. It is sometimes very difficult to move teeth without extraction in adult patients. We do have techniques that make working with adults much easier.
  • A small jaws and too many teeth can cause people to get extractions. In this case Dr Bovenizer is able to widen the jaw with self-ligating braces  such as the Damon System. Many doctors who don’t use the Damon System will extract teeth.
  • Protusion of the front teeth is often reason that teeth are removed. In this case some teeth on the side will need to be removed to make room for the front teeth to be correctly positioned.
  • Finally, to correct an overbite or underbite. If the upper and lower jaw sizes are mismatched, one way of  treating them is to surgically reposition them. Another way to handle this issue is to remove teeth
We rarely remove teeth when we are treating a patient.

If you have been told you need to have teeth removed and you are in the Raleigh/Cary area, give us a call and we’ll be happy to discuss your situation. As always, ask your doctor for a complete explanation of your specific needs and how they will be treated.

Bovenizer Orthodontics recognizes September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Every year, thousands of children across America are diagnosed with cancer—an often life-threatening illness that remains the leading cause of death by disease for children under the age of 15. The causes of pediatric cancer are still largely unknown, and though new discoveries are resulting in new treatments, this heartbreaking disease continues to scar families and communities in ways that may never fully heal. This month, we remember the young lives taken too soon, stand with the families facing childhood cancer today, and rededicate ourselves to combating this terrible illness. Please consider making a donation the our local Ronald McDonald House of Durham.
